What is this permit?

This is the residence permit for family reasons given to foreign minors who arrived in Italy without their parents (MSNA) who have been entrusted to a relative within the fourth degree (brother/sister, uncle/aunt, cousin, grandfather/grandmother...).

If you don't have relatives in Italy, you will be given a residence permit for unaccompanied foreign minor (MSNA).

The permit for family reasons is better because when you turn 18 it will be easier to convert it to another type of permit.

How long does this permit last?

It is valid until you turn 18 years old.

What are the conditions to obtain it?

You can obtain this permit if:

  • You have been entrusted to a relative within the fourth degree (brother/sister, uncle/aunt, cousin, grandfather/grandmother...) with a document from the Juvenile Court

Where do you apply for this permit?

You must apply for it directly at the Police Headquarters (Questura).

What documents do I need to request it?

At the time of the request, you will need to bring:

  • Birth certificate or ID card (if you have one)
  • Custody or guardianship document issued by the Juvenile Court
  • Declaration from Social Services confirming they are taking care of you
  • Residence certificate or hospitality declaration from the community/family where you live

What can I do with this residence permit?

With this permit you can:

  • Enroll in school, a professional course, or university
  • Register with the National Health Service (NHS-SSN) and have a general practitioner
  • Work with a regular contract (self-employment or employed work), but only after age 16

And when I turn 18?

Before turning 18, you can change your permit to:

  • Permit for study (if you are enrolled in school or university)
  • Permit for work (if you have a self-employment or employed work contract)
  • Permit for job seeking (if you are looking for work)

Warning: you must request to change the permit BEFORE turning 18, otherwise the permit expires and you risk becoming irregular.
