What is this residence card?

It is a residence permit given to non-EU family members of a European Union citizen who lives in Italy.

How long does this card last?

It lasts 5 years and can be renewed. After the first renewal it becomes permanent.

Who can apply for this card?

You can apply if you are:

  • Wife/husband or civil union partner of the EU citizen
  • Partners who have signed a cohabitation contract, even without marriage or civil union
  • Son/daughter up to 21 years old of the EU citizen or their spouse
  • Son/daughter over 21 years old of the EU citizen or their spouse, but dependent (you must show that you are financially dependent: documents from your country of origin, money sent to you from abroad, some Police Headquarters (Questura) also ask for proof that you are a tax dependent of the EU family member)
  • Mother/father of the EU citizen or their spouse, but dependent (you must show that you are financially dependent: documents from your country of origin, money sent to you from abroad, some Police Headquarters (Questura) also ask for proof that you are a tax dependent of the EU family member)
  • Grandmother/grandfather of the EU citizen or their spouse
  • Grandchild (child of children) of the EU citizen or their spouse up to 21 years old
  • Grandchild (child of children) of the EU citizen or their spouse, over 21 years old and dependent (you must show that you are financially dependent: documents from your country of origin, money sent to you from abroad, some Police Headquarters (Questura) also ask for proof that you are a tax dependent of the EU family member)

Where do you apply for this card?

You must submit the application to the Police Headquarters (Questura) of the area where you live.

You must apply within 3 months of entering Italy. If you are already in Italy with another type of visa (tourism, family, etc.), you can change it to a residence card if you meet all the requirements.

What documents do I need to apply for it?

  • Valid passport (page with your personal details and expiry dates, any visas and entry/exit stamps)
  • Your old residence permit (if you have one)
  • Identity document of the EU citizen
  • Hospitality declaration
  • Family status certificate of the EU citizen (issued by the municipality where they live)
  • Documents showing the degree of relationship (if they come from abroad they must be translated and legalized/apostilled)
  • Documents showing the EU citizen's income (Cu/730/Unico) (when it is required that the non-EU family member be financially dependent on the EU family member)
  • Documents showing that you live as a dependent (when it is required that the non-EU family member be financially dependent on the EU family member)

What can I do with this residence card?

With this card you can:

  • Work with a regular contract (self-employment or employed work)
  • Enroll in school, a professional course, or university
  • Register with the National Health Service (NHS-SSN) and have a general practitioner
  • Travel to Schengen countries for up to 90 days every 6 months, if you have a valid passport
  • After 5 years you can apply for the permanent residence card
