Permit for Social protection for victims of domestic violence

What is this permit?

It is a special residence permit for victims of domestic violence. "Domestic violence" refers to acts of physical, sexual, psychological or economic violence within the family or between current or former partners, regardless of cohabitation.

Who can apply for it?

The permit is granted when, during investigations or criminal proceedings for serious crimes related to domestic violence, a concrete danger to the victim is established. These crimes include:

• Family abuse
• Personal injury
• Female genital mutilation
• Kidnapping
• Sexual violence
• Stalking

EU citizens and their family members can also obtain this permit.

How do you apply?

The permit is issued by the Police Chief (Questore) (meaning you apply in person at Police Headquarters (Questura), not with the postal kit), based on:

• Proposal from the judicial authority, based on investigations
• Report from social services or anti-violence centers

⚠️ Attention: some Police Headquarters (Questura) might require a passport.

What rights does it give me?

• ✅ You can register with employment centers
• ✅ You can access welfare services

This permit is very useful also because it allows you to remain in Italy during the proceedings against the alleged abuser, so you can be an active participant during the process.

How long does this permit last?

It lasts 1 year and is renewable.
