What is this permit?

The residence permit for scientific research allows you to stay in Italy to conduct research activities at a university, research institution, or other recognized institute. It is provided for by article 27-ter of the Consolidated Immigration Act.

Who can apply for it?

You can apply for this permit if:

  • You have a hosting agreement with an Italian research institute recognized by the Ministry
  • You hold an academic qualification that allows you to access doctoral programs (usually a master's degree or equivalent)
  • You entered Italy with a visa for scientific research

How do you apply for this permit?

What rights does it give me? What do I have access to?

With this permit you can:

  • Work as a researcher at the institution indicated in the agreement
  • Register with the National Health Service (NHS)
  • Apply for residency
  • Carry out teaching activities related to research

How long does this permit last?

The permit lasts as long as the reception agreement. Generally from 1 to 2 years, renewable.

When does it expire and can I renew it?

Yes, you can renew it if the reception agreement is renewed or extended. Send the application with the postal kit before expiration.

How much does it cost?

The total cost is approximately 126,46€:

  • 80,46€ for the postal payment slip (includes the cost of the electronic permit)
  • 30€ to send the postal kit
  • 16€ for the revenue stamp
