Permit for Natural disaster

What is this permit?

The residence permit for natural disasters (Art. 20bis, Immigration Consolidated Act) is given to foreigners who cannot return to their country because there is a serious emergency ⚠️ (such as earthquakes, wars, natural disasters) that makes it dangerous to live there.

This permit is different from asylum application and you do not need to apply for international protection.

When can I apply for it?

You can apply for this permit if:

• You already live in Italy
• In your country there is a very serious and dangerous situation (emergency, calamity, disaster)
• You cannot return to your country safely
• The situation in your country puts your fundamental rights at risk (right to life, to freedom, to decide about your life)

The situation must be exceptional and temporary but also very dangerous.

How and where do you apply for this permit?

You must submit the application to the Police Headquarters (Questura) in the area where you live.

You must go directly to the Police Headquarters (Questura) and request an appointment

After you apply, the Police Headquarters (Questura) can check if there really is a dangerous situation in your country, and then will decide.

📋 What documents do you need?

• Documents that show the dangerous situation in your country: newspaper articles, reports from international organizations, official documents that show there is a serious emergency in your country
• Copy of documents that show how you support yourself in Italy (if you have them): pay slip, employment contract, assistance you receive
• Passport or similar document
• 2 photos
• Revenue stamp 16 euros

How long does it last?

The duration of the permit is six months, renewable for another six months if

With this permit you can:

• Obtaining residency in the Municipality where you live
• Work (with a regular contract - self-employment or employed work)
• Register with the National Health Service (NHS-SSN) and have a general practitioner
• Enroll in school, a professional course, or university
