Permit for Medical treatment - woman who is pregnant or with a child under 6 months

What is this permit?

It is a residence permit for foreign women who are pregnant and are already in Italy. The law (art. 19 of the Immigration Consolidated Act) prohibits the expulsion of pregnant women from the third month of pregnancy until six months after delivery. For this period, you can obtain a residence permit for medical treatment.

Who can apply for it?

• Foreign women in state of pregnancy (from the third month)
• Even if you don't have a valid residence permit or are irregular
• After childbirth, the permit also covers the six months following the child's birth

How do you apply?

It is requested with the postal KIT. Fill out the form and send it from an authorized post office. You will receive an appointment at the Police Headquarters (Questura).

⚠️ Attention: for this type of permit, if you don't have a hospitality declaration, indicating a domicile should be sufficient. The Police Headquarters (Questura) needs an address to know where you are.

⚠️ Attention: some Police Headquarters (Questura) might issue this permit in electronic format and therefore ask for payment of a postal payment slip of 30,46€.

What rights does it give me?

• ✅ You can work (employed work or self-employment)
• ✅ You can register with the National Health Service and have a general practitioner
• ❌ You cannot apply for family reunification with this permit

How long does this permit last?

It lasts 1 year. The permit covers the period from pregnancy until six months after birth.

When does it expire and can I renew it?

This permit is usually not renewable. When it expires, consult with a legal operator to see if you can obtain another type of residence permit.
