What is this permit?

The residence permit for medical treatment (art. 36 of T.U. 286/98) is designed for those who enter Italy with a specific visa to receive medical care. This is a permit for foreign citizens who need specialist medical treatments that are not available or not easily accessible in their country of origin.

Who can apply for it?

Can apply whoever:

  • Has obtained an entry visa for medical treatment from the Italian Embassy or Consulate
  • Has a declaration from the Italian healthcare facility (public or accredited private) that certifies the type of treatment, expected duration and any hospitalization
  • Has paid a deposit of 30% of the estimated cost of treatment to the chosen healthcare facility
  • Has demonstrated having sufficient resources to pay for medical expenses, food and accommodation

How/where do you apply?

You apply through the postal KIT available at authorized post offices.

Within 8 days from entering Italy, you must submit the application.

With this permit you can:

  • Work (employed work or self-employment)
  • Access medical care at the healthcare facility indicated in the visa
  • Register with the National Health Service (NHS (SSN)) or purchase private health insurance

⚠️ Remember: this permit is linked to the need for medical treatment. If the treatment ends, the permit may not be renewed.

How long does this permit last?

The duration is 1 year, based on the period necessary to complete the medical treatments indicated in the health certification.

When does it expire and can I renew it?

Yes, you can renew it if the healthcare facility certifies that you still need to continue treatment in Italy. For the renewal you will need to submit an updated declaration from the hospital.

How much does it cost?

For the application you must pay:

  • A postal payment slip of 30,46 €
  • A revenue stamp of 16 €
