Permit for Medical treatment - father of a minor child under 6 months or about to be born in Italy

What is this permit?

It is a residence permit for the father of the child when the mother is pregnant or has just given birth. The law (art. 19 of the Immigration Consolidated Act) protects the family unit in these situations.

Who can apply for it?

• The foreign father of the child, if living with the mother
• ⚠️ If you are married and cohabiting with the mother, you can get this permit without problems
• ⚠️ If you are NOT married and/or NOT cohabiting with the mother, it could be a problem to get this permit — seek qualified legal advice

How do you apply?

It is requested with the postal KIT. Fill out the form and send it from an authorized post office. You will receive an appointment at the Police Headquarters (Questura).

What rights does it give me?

• ✅ You can work (employed work or self-employment)
• ✅ You can register with the National Health Service and have a general practitioner
• ❌ You cannot apply for family reunification with this permit

How long does this permit last?

It lasts 1 year.

When does it expire and can I renew it?

This permit is usually not renewable. When it expires, consult with a legal operator to see if you can obtain another type of residence permit.
