Permit for FAMIT for family members of "static" Italian citizens

What is this permit?

It is a residence permit that is given to a family member of an Italian citizen who has never lived in other European Union countries.

How long does this permit last?

It lasts 5 years.

Who can apply?

The following can apply:

• Wife/husband of the Italian citizen (or civil union partner)
• Partners who have signed a cohabitation contract, even without marriage or civil union
• Children up to 21 years old (of the Italian citizen or spouse)
• Children over 21 years old (of the Italian citizen or spouse) who are dependents of the family. For this, proof must be provided (documents from the country of origin, receipts of money sent, and sometimes being registered as tax dependents)
• Parents (of the Italian citizen or spouse) who are dependents of the family. For this, proof must be provided (documents from the country of origin, receipts of money sent, and sometimes being registered as tax dependents)
• Grandparents (of the Italian citizen or spouse)
• Grandchildren (children of children) up to 21 years old (of the Italian citizen or spouse)
• Grandchildren (children of children) over 21 years old (of the Italian citizen or spouse) who are dependents of the family. For this, proof must be provided (documents from the country of origin, receipts of money sent, and sometimes being registered as tax dependents)

Attention: Brothers, sisters, uncles, cousins and other relatives do not have the right to this permit. For them, only a "facilitation" for entry and stay in Italy is provided.

What documents do I need?

At the time of application you will need to bring:

• Valid passport or document with photo that certifies your nationality
• Expiring/expired residence permit if you have one
• ID document of the Italian family member
• Documentation showing your regular presence in Italy
• Documentation showing that your family has sufficient income relative to the people who are part of it (this income must come from legal sources and must not be lower than the annual amount provided by law for each family member)
• Family certificate and residence certificate of the Italian family member (if done with self-certification, also include copies of the ID documents of each person present in the family)
• Registered rental contract or registered property deed, in the name of the Italian family member
• Health insurance for at least 12 months for non-EU citizen family members over 65 years old (except for parents of Italian citizens)
• Documentation proving the family relationship
• Proof that you are "dependent" on the Italian family member, such as certificates from your country of origin valid for 180 days. These documents must be translated and, if necessary, authenticated with apostille or by a notary
• Declaration by the Italian family member guaranteeing your support and confirming that you live together
• Hospitality declaration

What does it allow me to do?

With this permit you can:

• Have a residence permit for 5 years
• Establish residency where you live
• Work with a regular contract (self-employment or employed work)
• Register with the National Health Service (NHS-SSN) and have a general practitioner
• Travel freely in Italy and Schengen countries (with valid passport)
• Access training courses, schools and universities

How can I renew it?

Before expiration, you can renew this permit at the Police Headquarters (Questura) in your area by submitting:

• Valid passport
• Family and residence certificate
• ID document of the Italian family member
• Any other documents that might be required

Can I convert it?

If you meet the requirements, this permit can be converted to:

• Work permit
• Study permit
