The residence permit for employed work is issued if you work as an employee of an employer with a regular contract. This means you have a boss who pays you a salary and you are their employee.

What are the conditions to obtain it?

To get this permit you need to have a regular employment contract with an Italian employer and a pay slip of at least 538 euros per month, more or less.

How do I apply for this permit?

You apply at the post office with the postal kit.

How long does this permit last?

The duration depends on the type of work contract you have. Usually:

  • 2 years if your work contract is fixed-term (has an end date)
  • 3 years if your work contract is permanent (has no end date)


What rights does it give me?

With this permit you can:

  • Work with a regular contract (employed work or self-employment)
  • Obtain residence in the Municipality where you live
  • Register with the National Health Service (NHS) and have a general practitioner
  • Travel in the Schengen area with passport (for stays up to 3 months).
  • Enroll in school, a professional course, or university
  • Apply for family reunification

If you lose your job you don't lose the permit until expiration. You can:

Before it expires you have two options:

  1. Renew it: the renewal request should preferably be submitted before expiration or in any case within 60 days from expiration. The application is made with a postal kit.

2. Convert it: if you have all the necessary requirements, this permit can be converted into a residence permit for:

  • Study
  • Job seeking
  • Family reasons
  • Card for long-term residents (if you have at least 5 years of residence)

What is this permit?

It is a residence permit for those who work independently, that is do not have an employer, but carry out work or professional activity on their own (for example: merchant, craftsman, freelancer, etc.).

How long does this permit last?

  • The duration depends on the activity you perform and the documents you present, but usually it is 1 to 2 years.

When does the permit expire, what do I do?

  • You must apply for renewal before expiration or at most within 60 days after
  • If you meet the requirements, you can also convert it into another type of permit (study, family, long-term resident, employed work, etc.). You must request the conversion before expiration.

If I am unemployed at the time of renewal?

You can request the issue of a residence permit for job seeking, attaching the registration at the Employment Center!
