The residence permit for religious reasons is intended for foreign citizens who carry out activities related to a religious denomination in Italy. This is a permit for religious personnel, missionaries, ministers of worship and people sent to Italy by recognized religious organizations.

Who can apply for it?

Can apply whoever:

  • Has been sent to Italy by a religious organization recognized
  • Has documented religious assignment (for example: priest, nun, missionary, pastor)
  • Has obtained the entry visa for religious reasons

How/where do you apply?

You apply through the postal KIT available at authorized post offices.

Within 8 days from entering Italy, you must submit the application.

  • Carry out your religious activity in Italy
  • Register with the National Health Service (NHS (SSN)) or purchase private health insurance
  • Apply for residency

⚠️ Attention: with this permit you CANNOT work outside the religious activity for which it was issued.

How long does this permit last?

The duration depends on the religious assignment and is indicated in the permit. It usually corresponds to the duration of the mission or assignment.

When does it expire and can I renew it?

Yes, you can renew it if the religious organization confirms that your assignment in Italy continues. For renewal, you need a new declaration from the religious organization.

For the application you must pay:

  • A postal payment slip of 80,46 €
  • A revenue stamp of 16 €

What is this permit?

The residence permit for religious reasons is intended for ministers of worship, religious figures, missionaries and other individuals who carry out religious activities in Italy on behalf of recognized religious denominations. It allows carrying out activities related to one's religious ministry.

Who can apply for it?

This permit can be requested by those who:

  • Is a minister of worship (priest, pastor, imam, rabbi, monk, etc.)
  • Is a member of a religious order or congregation
  • Performs religious activities on behalf of a religious denomination recognized in Italy
  • Has received an official appointment from their religious organization
  • Entered Italy with a visa for religious reasons

How/where do you apply?

Before entering Italy:

  • You must apply for a visa for religious reasons at the Italian Consulate in your country

Once in Italy:

  • Within 8 working days of entry, apply for the residence permit through postal kit (Poste Italiane)
  • Or directly at Police Headquarters (Questura), if required

What rights does it give me? What do I have access to?

With this permit:

  • You can carry out religious and ministerial activities in Italy
  • You can celebrate rites, ceremonies and religious functions
  • You can carry out religious education and catechesis activities
  • You can access health services if you have health insurance
  • You CANNOT carry out work activities other than religious ones

⚠️ Warning: you can only carry out the religious activities provided for by your assignment, not other forms of work.

How long does this permit last?

The residence permit for religious reasons has a variable duration, usually 1 or 2 years, depending on the duration of the religious assignment. It can be renewed if the assignment continues.

When does it expire and can I renew it?

Yes, you can renew it if:

  • Your religious assignment is still ongoing
  • Your religious organization confirms the continuation of the mission
  • You have adequate means of support (provided by the religious organization)
  • You have valid health insurance

Can I convert it to another permit?

Conversion to other residence permits is possible in specific cases:

  • Permit for employed work (if you obtain an employment contract and there are available quotas)
  • Permit for family reasons (if you have an Italian spouse or regular foreign family member)
  • Permit for study (if you enroll in a training program)
  • EU permit for long-term residents (if you meet the income and residence requirements)
