What is this permit?

The residence permit for study reasons is given to foreign people who want to attend in Italy a study course, university or training course that lasts more than 3 months.

How do I apply for the permit?

The residence permit for study reasons is requested through postal kit by attaching the required documents.

How long does this permit last?

This permit can last from six months up to one year. You can renew it to cover the entire period of your course of study.

What rights does it give me / what do I have access to?

With this permit you can:

  • Travel to Schengen area countries for less than three months with your passport
  • Work with a regular contract (employed work) for a maximum of 1040 hours per year
  • Register with the National Health Service (NHS) by paying a fee of at least 700 euros per year, or have private health insurance.
  • Request family reunification, but only if you have enough money and suitable housing according to the law

Can I apply for this permit if I'm already in Italy?

Yes, you can apply for it if you already live in Italy and want to start or continue a course of study.

Can I renew it?

You must request renewal at the Police Headquarters (Questura) before the permit expires (or within 60 days), using the postal kit. You must add documents showing that you are still enrolled in the university or training course.

If you study at university, you can renew the permit for up to three years beyond the normal duration of the degree course. You can also renew it to pursue a specialization or doctoral degree.

What happens if I don't pass enough exams?

To renew the permit you must have passed:

  • At least one exam in the first university year
  • At least two exams in other years
  • You cannot enroll beyond the third year off-track

If you have documented serious health problems or other force majeure causes, you can renew the permit even if you have passed only one exam after the first year.
