What is this permit?
The residence permit for cohabitants with Italian citizens is given to foreigners who live in Italy together with Italian family members within the second degree (wife/husband; mother/father; son/daughter; grandmother/grandfather; grandchild; brother/sister).
How long does this permit last?
It has a validity of two years.
What are the conditions to obtain it?
The two fundamental elements for this permit are proof of family relationship and living together.
Family relationship: You are entitled to this permit if you are
- brother/sister of the Italian citizen
- spouse (or civil union partner, for same-sex couples) of the Italian citizen
- parent of the Italian citizen
- son/daughter (of any age) of the Italian citizen
- grandfather/grandmother of the Italian citizen
- grandchild (child of children) of the Italian citizen
Living together: it is necessary that you live with your Italian relative. You must be registered at the same address, even if you don't live together 100% of the time.
Where do you apply for this permit?
You must submit the application to the Police Headquarters (Questura) of the territory where you live with the Italian citizen, attaching all the required documents. You will be given a receipt that will allow you to remain in Italy legally until the decision.
During the evaluation phase, the Police Headquarters (Questura) may ask you for additional documents to those you have provided and possibly conduct interviews to verify your actual cohabitation with the Italian citizen.
